podcast Awards
« on: September 21, 2012, 04:25:29 AM »
Hey everyone
i was wondering if i should care about submitting Ti-Phy to the podcast awards?
by "care about" I mean submitting it, and encouraging people to vote every day.

the problem here is that my chances of winning are zero.
skeptics guide to the universe won the last two years, and they have  a pretty large audience,
and you win by getting votes.
we tried rallying people to vote for SSO a few years ago, and we did not win.
SSO has a larger listenership than TiPhy.
no chance.

on the other hand, we would get some visibility. and maybe that might help?

but whenever I vote, i *never* make a point of listening to nominated shows *other* than my favourite.

pffft.
I think i just won't bother.

there's a science category.
I bet science... sort of will get nominated again this year.

maybe i'd submit it for education, so that i wouldn't have to compete against SSO

but voting once a day gets kind of taxing.
it's a bad system, i think.
i'd rather votes got you in, and then a panel of past winners
or even a panel of the nominees, decide on the winner.

one strength of podcast awards, i think
is that it has the capacity to bring attention to brilliant and unrecognized work.
but  that won't work if it's just a popularity contest.

pfffttttttttttttttttttttt

I liked the old webcomic awards
where everyone who had a webcomic could vote.
that was a clever way to do it.

The podcast awards are super sucky. It's the ultimate expression of giving anal-retentive nerds control over a system of selecting the "best" and it results in a really awkward system that serves only the controllers of that system. I honestly got annoyed when I got the e-mail announcing it for this year.

All that being said, we do get a fair bit of traffic directed to the show just by being nominated, so there is some value in that publicity.

@Ben - you show is new enough that you'd likely have a hard time gaining much traction, but it can't hurt to try. I doubt SGU will be knocked off their pedestal, so you're not hurting SSO by giving it a shot.
I tweet, I tumbl, I read, I drink, and I write.

Not necessarily in that order, though.

maybe i should lean on andrew johnstone to start his own podcasting awards.

i'd start them myself, but i'd just do it to give myself one, so that doesn't work.
