Other Podcasts I like
« on: July 01, 2012, 08:30:12 AM »
Oh man, one of my favourite podcasts is the Big idea podcast  (http://bigideas.tvo.org/)

I like it because it's absolutely accessible and totally brilliant.

why is it that I absorb information so much better when i'm walking around than when i'm sitting still in a theater? I can't be the only one.

Hi Ed! it's good to see you here.
what kinds of podcasts do you listen to?

my tastes tend to swing every 4 month or so, so I'm always looking for new good shows too.

There's a *NSFW* comedy podcast I like called "Uhh Yeah Dude." It might take a few episodes to really "get it." You don't need to start from any point in particular but they talk about current events so I would suggest starting with the latest episode.

I am totally addicted to the "maximum fun" podcasts. They cheer me up so good.
judge john hodgman is pretty much the best use of the podcast medium.

and then the one with the brothers, and the one with the gay man and the lady.

yeah.
it's like having pals that live in my ears.

I liked John Hodgman on The Daily Show back when I had cable. I'll have to give that one a try.

It's kind of a strange thing.
on the daily show and in his books, he's the silliest person in the room with his "expert persona"

but on JJH, he's got to be a judge, so he's got to be serious sometimes.
it's still lots of fun.

Even with all my free time, I can barely keep up with the podcasts I subscribe to, but I'm sure once school starts up my weekly commute will become podcast-listenin'-time.

Other than those on the Brachiolope Network, I listen to Nerdist and Radio Free Burrito. Nerdist usually has some pretty hilarious conversations, but not really any substance like the Brachiolopes. Radio Free Burrito is just Wil Wheaton rambling.

Once I catch up with these, I'll check out your suggestions and see if they'll fit with my needs.

Geeks Guide to the Galaxy is a pretty neat podcast.  They interview sci fi/fantasy author for the first half of the show and then talk about various tropes in sci fi/fantasy media the second half.  If you're a fan of that genre of books/movies, it's fun, interesting, and offers some great insights into writing.
http://geeksguideshow.com/ or they're on Wired.com

I'm also a huge fan of the Geologic Podcast (which, incidentally has nothing to do with geology).  George Hrab is a skeptic musician who hots this variety act type podcast.  It's funny and entertaining with occasional bursts of science.

Those are pretty much my favorites after the Brachiolope Media productions.

While it's not really a podcast, www.kngi.org has their shows listed under the podcast section of the Zune Marketplace (and probably on iTunes).  If you like videogame music that is.

Aside from the major ones like Radiolab and a couple others already mentioned, I especially like Friday episodes of the Heidi and Frank Show for their Stay or Go segment--get to hear a couple songs from unsigned bands and the audience votes whether they should stay and pursue their dreams or go and toss their instruments off the Santa Monica pier.  Listening live is free.

Mike Duncan's 'The History of Rome' is excellent...kind of a complete survey course of the hostory of the whole shebang.

Dan Savage's 'Savage Love' is pretty cool

'Cognitive Dissonance' - for a skeptical news review of some of the particularly daft happenings around the US and world can be equal parts pretty cutting and pretty funny

Favoured Music Podcasts include:
Hypnogogue Podcast - For electronic and Ambient
Radio ThreeSixty
The Classical Performance Podcast - The WGBH Education Foundation

I've only just discovered The Infinite Monkey Cage, and it is fantastic.  I also like The Science Show, plus all the other ones already mentioned.

What do you guys think are the best of the maximumfun podcasts?  I've been listening to a bit of Stop Podcasting Yourself which is pretty cool, just wondering what other ones I should try.

  • judge john hodgman: it's the best because it's got john hodgman on in <3
  • throwing shade: it's got two people who take turns being informative and sassy/idiotic (yay! fun!)
  • my brother my brother and me: it's like hanging out with 3 brothers who are friends
