New type of Matter discovered called Nuclear Pasta?
« on: June 26, 2013, 10:52:02 PM »
Hopefully this isn't old news.

Saw an article at space that says they discovered a new type of matter called nuclear pasta in neutron stars. The article is real short and not much of an explanation or I just don't understand. I know Ti Phy covered neutron stars several times but never mentioned nuclear pasta.

Maybe Ben could do another episode with Jocelyn Read that is an expert on neutron stars.

man that sounds weird... So many questions:

Neutrons getting pressed together so that they form spaghettis? Does it even make sense to talk about a neutron at that point? Wouldn't that just be a soup of quarks? maybe a noodle soup?

i remember very clearly... It was definitely jocelyn... and then... dave? Fiona? ...
someone else... and they were telling me on skype about the different states of matter inside a neutron star.

it would be pretty sad if we weren't recording at the time.

maybe it's worth its own show.

I would have to go back and listen again, but I do remember yall talking about the states of matter.  I just didn't remember the words "nuclear pasta".

I just didn't realize that I was listening to a podcast about a new type of matter.  So Ti Phy was way ahead of the space website and google.  Congrats! ;D
