Makes me wonder why Mars was once so vocanically active in its recent past....if half of the planet had gone molten due to a huge impact, wouldn't that mean there would be more surface exposed to space resulting in quicker cooling?  If the mantle cooled so drastically, would there be energy enough left to make Olympus Mons?

Then again, I could see the opposite argument...it all cooled, but there was still enough energy under there to make a slowly oozing volcano that would go for years giving us a huge shield volcano.

I'm clearly not a geologist...

or an -ist of any kind to have these ideas...

 this episode was really great. After  listening yesterday I went back to my textbooks and  spent too  much time reading about  material responses under shock loads.  super cool.
PhD student in Materials Science at Arizona State University currently working on high-temperature superconductors and quantum computers or something.
