Crackpots!
« on: September 05, 2013, 04:20:54 PM »
There are a lot of crackpots out there, and they all seem to want to talk to you once they know you are a scientist.  Do you think its better to shutdown/ignore these people, or to try and encourage their curiosity and educate them on forming evidence-based theories?

yeah.
explaining things to them won't work.
because they already think they know how things work.

so. who knows?

at least they're not ruining the economy with their misunderstood theories?

I misread the title as "Crockpots", off to a bad start.

Depends. Engaging with a crackpot directly (eg via email or IM) is likely fruitless. However in a forum environment, this responses aren't really for the CP him/herself, they are for the lurkers reading along.

Thats a good point... even if the person you're talking to might not be convinced, onlookers might be swayed one way or the other.

crock pots are always posting on forums about new recipes for chicken enchiladas or pork roast or something.
