My Guests are So Great
« on: July 02, 2012, 06:32:03 PM »
Hi.
I thought I'd start a page where I regularly told you about how great My guests are.

Mostly, i try to have REALLY AWESOME PEOPLE on my show.
but because we spend the whole time talking about physics, and none of the time interviewing them
you don't really get to find out about why i think they're so awesome.

For Instance, Ryan North?

he just decided to exchange credit cards with the author of the MS Paint adventures comic.
the deal is that they're going to buy stuff without any consultation
and post about the results
here
and
here

THIS IS SO MUCH FUN.

speaking of great guests,

Remember the dudes from the HP Lovecraft literary podcast?

well, they've reached a milestone.
they have completed their review of hunter in the dark, the last of Lovecraft's stories.

congratulations Chris Lackey and Chad Fifer!

anyway, so now, if you've ever wanted to know what the whole lovecraft thing is about,
but had troubles with sleeping through them,
have a listen. it's great.

Blerf, I need to edit this week's show.

but the guest is cool!
It's nathan Lowell of podcast-audio books fame.

you might like to  listen to his fiction. it's really fun.
he wrote several in a series about a young man who works his way through the ranks in an interstellar shipping company as a spaceman. The first book is called quarter share, and it's a delight.

listen to it for free here.

I'll be on vacation starting this sunday,
but i'll episode 20 to update automatically 7 days from then.
the fun thing! IS!

our guest is  michael "mookie" terracciano the author of the webcomic "Dominic Deegan:oracle for hire".

mookie's webcomic is pretty fun. It's a sword and sorcery story,
centered on a family of magicians. The titular character can see through time, and in spite of the fact that he can't magically melt anyone's face off, it ends up being pretty helpful.

So I've read a lot of this genre of webcomics.
most of them become repetitive or derivative pretty quickly. There's a lot of tropes for this genre, and it's pretty easy to fall into them.

Dominic Deegan, though, doesn't. Not really. a few, maybe, earlier on, but it's a webcomic.

anyway, over the years, the comic has transcended the regular tropes. It's almost like, as Mookie has matured, so have the possibilities and lessons his characters face. Furthermore,  the comic has been written over the course of a decade, and Mookie has been taking advantage of this with his pacing and characters. Old characters and lessons keep popping up and helping out in fun and unusual ways.

anyway, it's a pretty fun read, and I've enjoyed it regularly for years now.

ugh.
in other news.
one very frustrating thing is getting a potentially impressive guest on your line,
and then having them slip the hook before you record.

"impressive" is an overstatement.  moderately well known and donkeying obnoxious would be the words that I would use.  No loss here Ben.

Okay.
I haven't been posting in this because i've been BUSY.

but I should mention, because i've got a lot of admiration for my last few guests.

Mur Lafferty is an author, and her most recent book is being podcasted: one chapter a week. It's really good. I mean, I've always kind of liked her work. but her latest book is actually SUPER FUN. and she won a campbell award, eh?
